Notes — Milton Bradley’s home run in the third inning landed just in front of me. I was surprised to see Matt Murton batting clean up for the Rockies.
Chicago pushed the lead to 6-2 against Vinnie Pestano in the eighth when Pierre drove in another run with a single. He added to his Major League best stolen base total with his 68th steal.
The promotion to Birmingham coincided with what appears to be some BABIP luck, as the soon-to-be 24-year-old Leesman’s opponent BABIP sat at .266 with the Barons. That BABIP-along with his 1 percent HR/fly ball rate-should be expected to regress in 2011, so unless he make some improvements as a pitcher, his results won’t be as good as they were in Birmingham. That being said, he’s one of the more intriguing pitchers of this group (given that he at least has a sliver of upside), so if the Sox were to take a chance with him for some April starts I’d personally be more interested than any of the other options.
In the 11th, Kelvin Herrera (2-3, 5.02 ERA) gave up a solo home run to Jordan Danks, the second HR of Danks’ career. Closer Addison Reed (2.40 ERA) retired the side to earn his 11th save.
The race will begin at 6:30 p.m. on July 12. After the race, the runners can attend a free post-race party in the stadium to watch the MLB All-Star Game on the Jumbotron. Donations will be accepted from non-runners at the gate who want to attend the party.
The Knights are 13 games under .500 so the sale jerseys brass might just want to leave well enough alone. The talent at Class-AAA is what it is and they have to sink or swim with what they have and hope they do not have to dip into that part of the farm system like they did a year ago. The big club is having struggles of their own at 11-15 in a wide open American League Central – for second place that is – with no guarantee that it will be good enough to make the playoffs even with an extra Wild Card being added to the mix.
Of course, no one else in the Biogenesis scandal was targeted for a year-long suspension. While Rodriguez seems to have saved what’s left of his 2013 season, the entire 2014 campaign and the start of 2015 is on the line. By that time, he will be 40 years old and likely have even less to offer than he does now.
I would keep instant replay away from judgment calls such as whether a runner is safe or out. I would also not use it for balls and strikes. This way, the human element remains in the game and replay is only used when it is absolutely necessary. A play will only come under review when the umpires feel it necessary to do so. Umpires will be evaluated in the same manner they are now. Those that make too many mistakes will not be available to work postseason games and thus will lose out on bigger paychecks.
